What’s up this coming week
This is the way I see next week…Monday is a holiday and you will all be skiing your heads off somewhere I’m sure. I’m sort of hoping to go to Northfield because I’ve never been there. Tues we’re going to do a hard skate workout at the school. Weds classic technique session at the school. Thurs is a half day hopefully for everybody??? even the middle schoolers? so we couyld carpool somewhere. Friday is a day off so we could go someplace and come back to the school to wax for the race on Sat. or just ski at the school.
These are somewhat fluid plans because I have been floating the idea amongst the coaches and powers that be to host the race Sat AT Mohawk! It is our turn to act as a host school, along with Taconic, no matter where it is held (means we have to see that the course is flagged, have timers available, annouce the results etc. etc.) why not do it at Mohawk. We are looking at cold weather this week and we have good snow cover at the school. If this becomes a reality I probably don’t want to stray to far from Mohawk on Fri cuz there might be grooming details to attend to but I’m open to suggestions. I’ll try to get an answer by say Tues wether it’s a go or not.
Open to suggestions…..

Prospect and Woodford
I’ve heard many great reports about the skiing up at Woodford and Prospect. I guess Prospect has 15 – 17 inches of snow, and the skiing there is “the best it’s been in several years” (Dennis). Duffy says that Woodford is fantastic as well. So if anyone feels like doing a bit of a drive at anytime, Prospect would be the place to go. For anyone who’s never been there before – Prospect is the place to ski when it comes to skate training. The trails are wide and long, and it’s a little more than an hour drive from Shelburne.
Pre-Season Racing
So Peter, Gayle, and I (Shane) went on a lovely little road trip yesterday up the Craftsbury Opener. It was a 10 Km freestyle race and it was very fun; There were a lot of Vermont skiers there, and the Dartmouth and UVM teams were racing. Sadly I didn’t beat anyone on those teams
, but my point is that the varsity skiers should be on the lookout for pre-season races that are happening nearby. I know that next weekend there is the Bolton Valley Opener on Saturday, it is a 5 Km freestyle race, and I think some of the Greylock team is going up (don’t hold me to it though). The following weekend on Saturday there is a classic race at Notchview that is very fun and unique (it’s a lap race for 35 minutes, so some skiers ski more laps than the less experienced ones). Go to the NENSA site to find out more…and if you’re curious, Peter’s and my race results are posted as well.
Enjoy the snow day! (although it’s more like ice and rain)
Notchview
I skied at Notchview yesterday and the conditions are fantastic for pre-season training. All of Circuit is open for skating, including the lower loop. I know they got a little more snow last night, so there’s about 5 inches now. If any of the new skiers want to get good skiing in this weekend, Notchview would be the place to do it. It’s relatively close and they’re holding the snow.
Start of the Season
